Evaluating annual severe coral bleaching risk for marine protected areas across Indonesia

چکیده

Coral reefs face an uncertain future under global climate change, with thermal-induced bleaching increasing in frequency such that corals will soon experience annual severe (ASB). Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are therefore becoming increasingly important as a conservation tool. Here we evaluate (i) Indonesia’s coral reefs’ spatial variation ASB, (ii) whether projected to have later onset of ASB (i.e. possible refugia) protected within MPAs, and (iii) the risk profiles for related MPAs receiving priority investments. Our results highlight considerable variability across being at ASB. The before 2028 is greater by versus those outside MPA boundaries. 2025 non-priority MPAs. Overall, our show only ∼45% reef areas currently located likely act thermal refugia (ASB > 2044). This unsurprising given network Indonesia has been established over many decades, most designated suitable projections were available inform placement. scope further incorporate potential into new designations. study also provides strategic information, which can support development long-term strategy effectively manage, mitigate, adapt impacts change on reefs.

Coral reef fishes exhibit beneficial phenotypes inside marine protected areas

Human fishing effort is size-selective, preferentially removing the largest individuals from harvested stocks. Intensive, size-specific fishing mortality induces directional shifts in phenotypic frequencies towards the predominance of smaller and earlier-maturing individuals, which are among the primary causes of declining fish biomass. Fish that reproduce at smaller size and younger age produc...

Climate Change, Coral Reef Ecosystems, and Management Options for Marine Protected Areas

Marine protected areas (MPAs) provide place-based management of marine ecosystems through various degrees and types of protective actions. Habitats such as coral reefs are especially susceptible to degradation resulting from climate change, as evidenced by mass bleaching events over the past two decades. Marine ecosystems are being altered by direct effects of climate change including ocean war...

Toward pristine biomass: reef fish recovery in coral reef marine protected areas in Kenya.

Identifying the rates of recovery of fish in no-take areas is fundamental to designing protected area networks, managing fisheries, estimating yields, identifying ecological interactions, and informing stakeholders about the outcomes of this management. Here we study the recovery of coral reef fishes through 37 years of protection using a space-for-time chronosequence of four marine national pa...
